The UK Government announces an extension to the CE mark recognition beyond the 31st December 2024

The announcement was made by the Department for Business and Trade, the DBT, on the 1st August this year. Prior to this announcement, the CE mark was set to become obsolete in the UK on the 31st December 2024, leaving the new UKCA mark as the only valid recognition of product conformity.

The reason for this extension according to the Business Secretary is, “to prevent a cliff-edge moment in December 2024 when UKCA was set for entry. This intervention will ensure businesses no longer face uncertainty over the regulations and can cut back on unnecessary costs freeing them up to focus on innovation and growth”.

Another benefit of this new announcement will be to create more confidence for international suppliers doing business in the UK. They believe that this is a more pragmatic approach and will help businesses in general.

At present this update only applies to the 18 regulations that fall under the Department for Business and Trade (DBT). These are:

· toys

· pyrotechnics

· recreational craft and personal watercraft

· simple pressure vessels

· electromagnetic compatibility

· non-automatic weighing instruments

· measuring instruments

· measuring container bottles

· lifts

· equipment for potentially explosive atmospheres (ATEX)

· radio equipment

· personal protective equipment (PPE)
